We welcome the judgement in favour of reservation for economically poor students - V. Ramalingam

The Kerala Brahmana Sabha welcomed Kerala High Court’s judgement in the petition filed by Muslim Jama-ath Council against the Government of Kerala order granting reservation in education sector for the economically poor students from forward castes. V. Ramalingam, State President said that the poor among the forward castes are the one who suffer as the reservations are meant only for the SC/ ST and OBC segments at present. Meritorious poor students among the forward castes should get a fair chance and should not suffer because of their economic condition.

The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Bannur Mutt and Justice A. K. Basheer in their verdict evaluated that, the financial background of those who enjoy caste based reservation has improved and they must try to reach the mainstream of society. They have been availing reservation since independence.

The court dismissed the Muslim Jama-ath Council's petition challenging the government order of September 8th, 2008 granting 10% reservation in state-run colleges and 7.5% in university departments for Below Poverty Line (BPL) students from forward castes.
