Medical Aid handed over to Sundarambal, Kalady

The District Committee of Ernakulam is providing Medical Assistance for the needy people among the community who are financially backward. On Tuesday, the 24th of August, Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Ernakulam District Committee handed over Rs. 7000/- as Medical Aid to Sundarambal of Kalady Upasabha. V. Krishnaswami (District President) visited Sundarambal’s house and handed over the amount in the presence of Upasabha members and District office bearers.

Grand Onam celebrations at Perumbavoor

Onam was celebrated at Perumbavoor Upasabha with variety of competitions for the members and family on 21st, 22nd and 23rd of August 2010. An Onasadya was also arranged on the day of Thiruvonam.
The efforts taken by the organizing committee, especially A. Mahadevan, Convener, H. Vanchiswaran and S. Suparna, both Joint Conveners; to bring this three day program were well appreciated. Vadam Vali was the attraction among the entire competitions.

The Annual General Body of the Vanitha Vibhagam, Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Perumbavoor Upasabha was held on 23rd of August 2010 at 2.00 p.m. The meeting was presided by J. Lalitha, President of Vanitha Vibhagam, Peumbavoor. The Annual Report and Accounts for the year 2009-2010 was passed in the General Body. Lakshmi S. R., Secretary, N. Scholarship for Rohith R. Krishnan

Kalanjali 2009 fame, Master Rohith R. Krishnan - an 8th standard student from Ernakulam has been selected for Scholarship in Carnatic Music instrumental - Violin for the year 2010 under the Cultural Talent Search Scholarship Scheme of the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training - an autonomous organization under the aegis of Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The Cultural Talent Search Scholarship Scheme aims at providing facilities to outstanding young children to develop their talents in various artistic fields.

Rohith is studying in Rajagiri Public School, Kalamassery who has special interests towards Classical Music, both instrumental and vocal. He is learning Classical Music from the Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award winner Prof. Abdul Azeez of RLV College of Music, Thripunithura. Rohith has also won First prize for Carnatic Music - Violin in Augustine Joseph Memorial All Kerala Music Competition and Third prize for Carnatic music - Vocal in CBSE School state level competition. Master Rohit R. Krishnan is son of K. Ramakrishnan (Manager - Administration, Federal Bank, Treasury Department) and S. Latha and grandson of R. Krishna Iyer and Thankam Krishna Iyer of Perumbavoor.

Onam Celebrations at Perumbavoor Upasabha

The Kerala Brahmana Sabha and its Vanitha Vibhagam of Perumbavoor is jointly organizing competitions for its members in connection with Onam celebrations this year. The competitions are scheduled to be conducted on 21st, 22nd and 23rd of August 2010 at Samooham Bhajana Mandapam. On the day of Thiruvonam, Ona Sadya will be served for the members and family. Different interesting games like Kasera Kali, Vallichaattam, Anthakshari, Mittayi Perukkal, Kolam Varakkal, Chaakkilottam, Ammanamaadal, Lemon and Spoon, Kuppiyil Vellam Nirakkal, Sundarikku Pottu Kuthal, Soochiyil Nool Korkkal, Onam Prasnothari, Memory Test, Onappaattu Malsaram, Chenda, Pookkalam, Kalam Thallal and Vadam Vali are to be conducted here in three days. The prizes for the winners will be distributed in the closing ceremony on the day of Thiruvonam. An Organizing Committee has been formed under the guidance of N. Ranganathan and N. Hariharasubramaniam with A. Mahadevan as Convener, H. Vanchiswaran and S. Suparna as Joint Conveners, V. Vivek, Aiswarya R., S. Poornesh, H. Sreenesh and Anuraj P. as committee members for the Onam Celebrations.

An exclusive free to download album in Malayalam by a team of music loving bloggers is now available in the web. Four bloggers from four corners of the World have teamed up online to create this heart swinging tunes, killing the hassles of piracy. The album was released in June and is receiving an amazing response. Nine soulful songs in the album stands testimony to the talent and dedication of the 'eeNam' team. 64th Independence Day celebrated

The 64th Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Perumbavoor Upasabha. N. Ramachandran, President of Upasabha and Vice President of Ernakulam District hoisted the National Flag at 8.00 a. m. Children sang the patriotic songs. K. Hari (Secretary), N. Ramaswami (Samooham Vice President), Kamala Hariharan (Narayaneeyam Seva Samithy), A. N. Hariharan, J. Lalitha (President, Vanitha Vibhagam), Lakshmi Hariharasubramaniam (Secretary, Vanitha Vibhagam) and Rajalakshmi (Joint Secretary, Vanitha Vibhagam) addressed the gathering.

T. V. Krishnamony, Vice President, Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Ernakulam City Unit hoisted the flag in front of Gramajana Samooham at Ernakulam. A. K. Seshadri, President, Gramajana Samooham, volunteers and office bearers of Sabha, Gramajana Samooham and children were present on the occasion.

Onam Trade Fair inaugurated at Ernakulam

The Onam Trade Fair organised by Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Ernakulam City Unit was inaugurated by Honourable Justice T. R. Ramcahdnran Nair on Wednesday, the 11th of August 2010. The first sale was accepted by L. Sivanandan, of Maharaja Textiles, Ernakulam.

With an objective to find out market for the typical Brahmin food items, the Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Ernakulam City Unit is organizing every year a Trade Fair in connection with the festival Onam. The traditional food items available here, like Kondattams, Thamaravalayam, Sweet Boli, Murukku, Cheedai, Poruvilankai, Thattai, Kadumangai and all types of pickles, chips etc. are prepared by the Brahmins. The amount collected through this Onam Trade Fair will be used for uplifting the poor Brahmin families. Arrangements are also made to distribute Palada Pradhaman and Pazha Pradhaman on the days of Uthradam and Thiruvonam. The stall is equipped in front of Gramajana Samooham Hall, Near Siva Temple at Ernakulam and functions from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. on working days and from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. on holidays.

Avani Avittam - an important ritual for Brahmin Community

Avani Avittam is an important ritual associated with the Brahmin community in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The day is of great significance to Yajur Vedi Brahmins. On the next day, Gayatri Japa Sankalmpam is observed. In other parts of South India, the observance is known as Upakarma. This year, the date of Avani Avittam is 24th of August and the date of Gayathri Japam is 25th August.

Yajur Vedi Upakarma Avani Avittam is on 24th August and Rig Vedi Upakarma and Avani Avittam is on 23rd August this year.

On the day of Avani Avittam, the sacred thread worn is changed and it is usually a community observance and takes place on the banks of a pond or river. Avani is the name of the Tamil month and Avittam is one of the 27 nakshatras or stars. Chingam is the equivalent Malayalam month.

Gayatri Japam Sankalmpam is noted for the chanting of the Gayatri Mantra for 1008 or 108 times. Sama Vedi Brahmins perform the ritual the day after Shravan Amavasi.

AGB of Ernakulam District held at Thripunithura

The Annual General Body of Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Ernakulam District was held at Shivapoorna a/c Auditorium at Thripunithura on Sunday, the 8th of August 2010. The meeting was presided by V. Krishnaswami. Annual Report and the audited Accounts for the year 2009-2010 were passed in the meeting after discussions. Around 250 delegates attended the meeting.

The official flag of Kerala Brahmana Sabha was hoisted by V. Krishnaswami, marking the beginning of programmes. After the presidential address, Swathi H. Padmanabhan, winner of Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer Award for Tamil - Malayalam translation and Dr. T. K. Raman, Corporate trainer and HRD/Management/Marketing consultant were honoured in the meeting for their outstanding contributions to the society. Swathi H. Padmanabhan was draped a Ponnada by V. Ramalingam, State President and presented a memento by P. S. Raman, Persident, Central Zone. Dr. T. K. Raman was draped a Ponnada by V. Krishnaswami, District president and presented a memento by N. R. Parameswaran, Secretary, Central Zone. A CD of the Inaugural Ceremony of the building complex at Thripunithura was released in the function.

Resolutions were passed in the meeting requesting the State Government to implement necessary steps immediately to ensure the quality and price standards of the vegetables and grocery, especially during the Onam season, to fasten the smart city project which enables employment for many educated youth and to complete the construction of the fly-over at Vyttila simultaneously with the proposed Vyttila Bus Terminal.

Bhagavathy Seva at Kalady

Under the auspices of Brahmasree Naredra Bhatt of Sree Sringeri Mutt Vedasala, a Bhagavathi Seva was conducted by the Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Kalady Upasabha on Wednesday, the 4th of August 2010 at Yathri Nivas of Sankara Mutt. The pooja commenced by 6.00 p. m. and came to end with Deeparadhana at 9. 30 p. m. Lakshmi Bhavani, who secured 'A Plus' for for all subjects in the High School Examination and Prof. H. Padmanabhan, winner of Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer Award were honoured on the occasion.

Annual General Body of Kottayam District held at Thiruvarppu

The Annual General Body of Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Kottayam District was conducted in a grand manner at Thiruvarppu Brahmana Samooham on Sunday, the 18th July, 2010 under the chairmanship of H. Ramanathan, Dist President. P. S. Raman, State Vice President, N. R. Parameswaran, Central Zone Secretary, K.Venkitachalam, Secretary, G. Subhash, District Tresurer, S. S. Ayyar, Former State President, V. A. Krishnamoor thy, President, Thiruvarppu Upasabha, M. V. Janaky Ammal, President, District Vanitha Vibhagam, Jalaja Narayanan, District Secretary, Vanitha Vibhagam were present in the meeting. Educational awards to various children of members were also distributed. More than 100 members were present in the meeting.

Dr. T. K. Raman gets acclamation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Dr. T. K. Raman, a leading Corporate Trainer and Chairman of TILT (The Institute of Leadership Training), Kochi was acclaimed in the recently concluded Regional Congress and Convocation of the O. I. U. (Open International University), Colombo held at Kuala Lumpur, Malasia on 11th July 2010. He was invited by the Open International University to present a paper on 'Emotional Intelligence’. The presentation was declared as the best paper presented during the Congress and received with great applause and standing ovation. 167 delegates from Malaysia, China, Philippines, Colombo and India attended the Congress. Chancellor of O. I. U., Prof. Dr. Sir. Githanjan Mendis chaired the session. Dr. Raman is also the Promoter and Guide for the Ph.D. programme of the Open International University, Colombo since 2008.

Dr. T. K. Raman is son of Late. T. H. Krishna Iyer (Thrissur), Retired Head Master and Freedom Fighter. He is married to Radha Raman and blessed with one son; Rajesh Raman working as I. T. Consultant in London. Dr. T. K. Raman was one among the faculty for 'Punarjani' - a student training programme conducted by Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Ernakulam District Committee at Cherai in April 2010 and 'Bhavana 2010' - a two day training camp organised by Kerala Brahmana Sabha, Ernakulam City Unit at Chinmaya International Foundation at Piravom in May 2010.
